ODM Official Breaks Silence on Oburu's Health, Reveals Doctor's Advice

Questions surrounding the absence of Siaya senator Oburu Oginga from several major ODM events have continued to grow after party officials confirmed that he had been unwell.

The veteran politician, who has remained one of the most influential figures in the Orange Democratic Movement, has missed a series of high-profile meetings and gatherings in recent weeks, sparking concern among supporters and political observers.

Speculation intensified after Oburu failed to attend the highly publicised ODM retreat held in Mombasa.

The meeting brought together governors, members of the party’s National Executive Committee, and senior leaders allied to the party.

Among those who attended the retreat were Cabinet Secretaries John Mbadi, Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya.

Reports indicate that the last major public political event attended by Oburu was the ODM Youth League Convention held in Nairobi on April 20.

Since then, he has also missed another youth congress in Kilifi and the opening of Raila Odinga Hospital in Kongowea, Nyali. The hospital event was presided over by Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir.

His continued absence from these important party functions triggered fresh rumours regarding his health and political future.

However, an ODM official moved to calm the growing concerns during the Mombasa retreat, revealing that the 82-year-old leader had been placed on bedrest following medical advice from his doctor.

The official explained that Oburu had been unwell but was recovering well.

Suna East MP Junet Mohammed also addressed the issue and assured ODM supporters that the party leader was in stable condition.

According to Junet, he had personally spoken with Oburu and confirmed that he was doing well.

He further disclosed that the ODM party was planning to hold a Central Committee meeting next week, an indication that normal party activities are expected to continue despite the concerns surrounding Oburu’s absence.

The developments have continued to attract attention within ODM, especially at a time when the party is facing growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.
