Cracks in Kenya Kwanza: Bungoma Protesters Issue Defiant Declaration Against Speaker Wetang’ula

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula faces an escalating political crisis in his traditional Western Kenya backyard following a defiant public declaration issued by protesters during coordinated demonstrations on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

What began as a nationwide gathering to mark the second anniversary of the historic 2024 anti-tax demonstrations rapidly transformed into a localized referendum against the Speaker's political supremacy.

Gathering in the heart of Bungoma town, thousands of vocal demonstrators and civil society groups formally denounced the veteran lawmaker, throwing the region's established political order into absolute uncertainty.

The primary catalyst for the widespread local anger stems from a combination of unresolved economic grievances and a bitter, ongoing legislative feud within the ruling coalition.

Protesters loudly condemned the punitive national economic policies coming out of Parliament while simultaneously accusing Wetang’ula of orchestrating a personal political vendetta that led to the recent controversial suspension of Bumula MP Jack Wamboka from a powerful parliamentary committee.

The declaration read aloud by youth leaders at the Bungoma bus park explicitly accused the Speaker of using his powerful office to stifle independent legislative voices from the region and weaken Ford Kenya’s local leadership structures.

The highly charged political rhetoric quickly manifested as physical disruptions on the streets, paralyzing transport and commercial operations across the major agricultural hub. Rows of burning tires and heavily fortified boulders blocked major highways, as anti-riot police forces deployed tear gas and flashbangs to prevent crowds from marching toward the local constituency offices.

In an official post-demonstration security briefing, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that while security teams managed to maintain general order, police units arrested nine individuals in Bungoma County directly linked to road obstructions and malicious damage to property.

This localized eruption signals a precarious shift for Wetang’ula as competing political factions begin positioning themselves for the high-stakes 2027 General Election. By openly challenging the Speaker in his core political base, local activists and rival politicians are successfully capitalizing on rising public discontent to chip away at Ford Kenya's long-standing regional dominance.

As the smoke clears from today’s volatile encounters, the administration’s legislative chief faces the challenging task of rebuilding broken bridges with his core electorate or risk a total collapse of his Western alliance ahead of the next electoral cycle.
