Online Poll Places Kalonzo at 42% as President Ruto Trails in Third Position at 18%

An online poll on Kenya's preferred presidential candidate for the 2027 general election has placed Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka at the top with a commanding lead, reigniting public debate about the shape of the country's next succession contest.

The poll, shared by Kieni MP Ndungu Nyoro on his Facebook page, had attracted a total of 61,237 votes, with Kalonzo garnering 26,187 votes, equivalent to 42 percent of all responses.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i came in second with 14,827 votes representing 24 percent, while President William Ruto occupied third position with 11,284 votes translating to 18 percent of the total votes cast.

Linda Mwananchi Movement leader and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna took fourth place with 5,764 votes at nine percent, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua polled fifth with 2,025 votes at three percent.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga and People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua trailed at the bottom with 712 and 438 votes respectively.

Ndungu Nyoro noted with satisfaction that the president was gradually closing the gap, having moved from 16 percent to 18 percent as the poll progressed.

He encouraged his followers to participate, framing the exercise as a reflection of the national political mood.

While online polls do not carry the scientific rigour of formal surveys and are susceptible to organised voting drives by supporters of specific candidates, the numbers have nonetheless captured widespread public attention.

The results reflect the growing momentum of opposition figures, particularly Kalonzo and Matiang'i, in public consciousness ahead of 2027.

The poll adds to a growing body of sentiment indicators suggesting that the 2027 presidential race will be fiercely competitive, with no single candidate commanding an overwhelming majority of public support at this stage.
