Political temperatures in Nairobi are rising years ahead of the 2027 General Election, with fresh debate emerging over the future of the city’s Senate seat.
Calvince Okoth, widely known as Gaucho, has openly expressed confidence that Lang’ata Member of Parliament Phelix Odiwuor, popularly called Jalang’o, would win the seat if he challenges incumbent Senator Edwin Sifuna.
The remarks come shortly after Jalang’o confirmed that he is considering a bid for the Nairobi Senate rather than seeking re-election in Lang’ata.
Jalang’o Signals New Political Ambition
The first-term MP, who transitioned from media and entertainment into politics, explained that his decision is based on extensive interactions with residents across Nairobi’s constituencies.
According to him, his consultations and grassroots engagements convinced him that he is capable of serving the capital at a higher legislative level.
In a recent radio interview, Jalang’o maintained that leadership positions in Nairobi are within his reach, arguing that his exposure to the concerns of city residents has strengthened his resolve to pursue broader responsibilities.
His declaration has since sparked debate online and within political circles, with some critics suggesting that unseating a sitting senator would be an uphill task.
Gaucho: Popularity Does Not Equal Votes
Gaucho, however, dismissed the assumption that public visibility automatically translates to electoral success. In his view, political campaigns are won at the ballot not through media presence or loud public statements.
He argued that voters make decisions based on different factors, insisting that what appears as popularity may not necessarily reflect the true mood on the ground.
In a bold twist, Gaucho went further to claim that, given sufficient campaign resources, he himself would stand a chance against Jalang’o. His comments have added fuel to an already growing conversation about the capital’s political direction.
ODM Shake-Up Adds New Dimension
The unfolding debate coincides with recent changes within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Edwin Sifuna was recently removed from the influential position of Secretary General following a National Executive Council meeting held in Mombasa.
Party officials cited concerns related to internal discipline and adherence to party structures. In their statement, the leadership emphasized that ODM operates under constitutional guidelines and collective decision-making mechanisms.
Following the decision, Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo was appointed to serve in an acting capacity as Secretary General.
The development has introduced new political calculations, especially if Sifuna chooses to defend his Senate seat amid shifting party dynamics.
A High-Stakes Contest in the Making
Nairobi remains one of Kenya’s most politically strategic counties. The Senate seat carries national visibility and influence, making it a key prize for ambitious leaders.
If Jalang’o officially enters the race and Sifuna seeks another term, the contest could become a defining political showdown ahead of 2027. Analysts note that success in Nairobi often depends on grassroots networks, voter mobilization, campaign strategy, and coalition-building across the city’s diverse electorate.
While the election is still some time away, early positioning and public statements suggest that the battle lines are gradually being drawn.
As political alignments continue to evolve, Nairobi voters may witness one of the most competitive Senate races in recent history.
