East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga has stirred online conversation after sharing a Bible verse widely interpreted as a subtle message amid escalating leadership tensions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The daughter of the late Raila Odinga posted a scripture from 1 Timothy 6:10 on her Facebook page a verse cautioning that “the love of money is the root of all evil.” Though she did not mention anyone directly, the timing of the post has fueled speculation across political circles.
Growing Divide Within ODM
ODM has experienced mounting internal friction following the assumption of party leadership by Oburu Oginga on October 15, 2025, after Raila’s passing.
Since then, two distinct factions have emerged:
Pro-cooperation faction:
Includes Oburu, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Suna East MP Junet Mohammed, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir. This camp supports a broad-based arrangement that has seen ODM collaborate with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in backing President William Ruto.
Opposition-leaning faction:
Led by embattled ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, this group insists ODM should remain firmly in opposition ahead of the next general election.
Winnie Odinga has publicly aligned herself with the Sifuna-led faction, a move that has placed her at odds with her uncle Oburu.
The Scripture That Raised Eyebrows
In her Facebook post, Winnie shared a photo of a highlighted passage from a Luo-language Bible quoting 1 Timothy 6:10:
“For the love of money is the root of all evil…”
Though she did not elaborate, many observers interpreted the post as a symbolic commentary on the party’s current direction and internal disagreements — particularly debates surrounding cooperation with the government.
Political analysts note that cryptic messaging has increasingly become a subtle communication strategy among Kenyan leaders during sensitive internal disputes.
Public Appeals to Winnie
Amid the unfolding tensions, Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang, an ally of Oburu, publicly appealed to Winnie to reconsider her alignment. He urged her to safeguard Raila’s political legacy and support the current leadership.
The appeal underscored the emotional and generational dimensions of the ODM conflict, which many see as not only a political disagreement but also a test of succession dynamics within one of Kenya’s most influential parties.
The ODM wrangles carry significant implications for:
The party’s strategy ahead of the next general election
Opposition unity in Parliament
Youth influence in party leadership
Raila Odinga’s political legacy
With ODM historically shaping Kenya’s opposition politics, internal fractures could redefine alliances and national political narratives in 2026 and beyond.
